Brick by brick

Earlier in the year I listened to Will Smith’s new book on Audible.

He starts the book by telling a story about the time his Dad, “Daddio”, made him and his
brother build a brick wall.

As kids, it took them a year to build this wall, working evenings, weekends and holidays. They felt like it was a never-ending project, that it was impossible to finish.

When they expressed their frustrations to Daddio, he said:

“Stop thinking about the damn wall. There is no wall. There are only bricks. Your job is to lay this brick perfectly. Then the next one. Don’t be worrying about no wall. Your only concern is one brick.”

Will continues with the lesson he took from this experience:

“The secret to my success is as boring as it is unsurprising: You show up and you lay another brick.”

This stuck with me, and it is the same message I endeavour to share with you. Whether you are losing weight, getting fit, moving up in your career, raising a family, or just trying to live a happier life, the path to success is the same.

Masterpieces don’t happen immediately, they are created
Step by step,
Piece by piece,
Choice by choice,
Day by day.

Results are created when you show up once. And then you show up again. And
again. And again.

That’s consistency.

Consistency isn’t perfection, it’s just choosing to show up one more time.

That’s how you win.

Stop focusing on the end goal, which often makes us feel overwhelmed by how far we still have to go… Instead, focus on the step that’s right in front of you, the next decision, the next brick.

Before you know it, you’ll have built a whole damn wall.
